There is a particular pleasure in watching a skincare argument that both sides are wrong about.
On one side of the beef tallow debate is a rapidly growing community — roughly 800 million cumulative views on TikTok’s #tallowskincare hashtag, and a global tallow skincare market that hit $277 million in 2025 and is projected to reach $403 million by 2032 — arguing that a rendered animal fat their great-grandmothers used is the missing link in modern skincare. The pitch is aesthetic and ideological in roughly equal measure: bioidentical, ancestral, seed-oil-free, unspoiled by industry. Search interest for “beef tallow moisturizer” grew 472% year over year as of March 2025, according to Glimpse trend data, putting it at roughly 48,000 monthly searches at that snapshot. Shopify sales in the category reportedly grew around 400%. The U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services publicly endorsed the ingredient. This is not a niche moment.
On the other side are dermatologists, largely on Instagram and in mainstream media, reacting with a mixture of alarm and derision. The counterargument is usually some variation of: it’s comedogenic, it smells, it’s not evidence-based, buy something with better data. Both statements can be technically true and still be intellectually lazy responses to a live consumer question about a specific class of lipid.
What no one on either side has done particularly well is read the actual literature. Which, as of late 2025, is finally worth reading — because for the first time, we have a peer-reviewed audit of the claims themselves.
The study that broke the discourse
In November 2025, four researchers — Lanah Almatroud, Sooin Choi, Karissa Libson, and Kurt Ashack — published a cross-sectional analysis in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology titled “Beef Tallow-Based Skincare Claims in Social Media” (DOI: 10.1111/jocd.70544). The design was straightforward. They pulled 200 posts — 50 each from YouTube Shorts, YouTube long-form videos, Instagram, and TikTok — that had a primary focus on beef tallow for skincare. Then they coded each one for: what the poster claimed the tallow did, what conditions it was recommended for, whether risks were disclosed, whether evidence was cited, and whether the person posting had a financial relationship with a tallow product.
The findings, in order of severity:
Financial bias was the norm, not the exception. On Instagram, 46 out of 50 posts (92%) demonstrated financial bias — the researchers defined this as an affiliate link, partner discount code, explicit sponsorship, or a disclosed ownership or employment relationship with a tallow product. On YouTube long-form video, 37 of 50 (74%). On both YouTube Shorts and TikTok, 28 of 50 (56%). Across all 200 posts, over 69% of the sample was commercially conflicted. This is not standard consumer skepticism about influencers being paid. This is the majority of the content on this ingredient being produced by people with a direct financial stake in your decision.
Risk disclosure was worse. Of the 50 Instagram posts, exactly zero mentioned any risk of tallow use. Zero. YouTube Shorts: 9 posts (18%). TikTok: 10 posts (20%). YouTube long-form videos performed best, with 12 posts (24%) — and the researchers noted that roughly half of these were posted by dermatologists, who were doing the disclosure work the paid promoters were not. On the platform where the trend is loudest (TikTok), 4 out of 5 tallow posts do not mention that the ingredient might not be right for your skin type.
Evidence citation was near-zero. Across 200 posts, only 9 cited any evidence at all. Instagram: 0. TikTok: 0. YouTube Shorts: 1. YouTube long-form: 8. In a category selling itself on the authority of ancestral wisdom and skin biology, over 95% of the content is unsourced. The evidence-forward posts are, again, disproportionately from dermatologists disagreeing with the trend.
Credentialing was thin. Across all 200 posts, only 15 speakers were dermatologists and only 9 were non-dermatologist physicians. Roughly 88% of the content was produced by people with no medical or dermatology credentials, most often personal channels and beauty or skincare brands.
The study’s official conclusion, quoted directly: “Despite growing anecdotal claims that beef tallow benefits skincare and dermatologic conditions, evidence remains insufficient to support these claims. Many promotions of beef tallow for skin care are associated with financial bias.”
That is, if you are keeping score, the strongest peer-reviewed sentence anyone has ever written about the tallow trend. And it is not saying the ingredient is bad. It is saying the information environment around the ingredient is compromised.
What tallow actually is
Rendered beef tallow, at the fatty acid level, is a relatively simple lipid. Grass-fed tallow typically breaks down to approximately 47% oleic acid (a monounsaturated omega-9), 26% palmitic acid (a saturated fat), 14% stearic acid (another saturated fat), and small percentages of linoleic acid (an essential omega-6), myristic, and traces of other fatty acids. The proportions vary with the animal’s diet — grain-finished tallow has a slightly different profile than grass-finished — but the dominant lipids are consistent.
Human sebum, the oil your face produces on its own, breaks down to roughly 35–40% oleic acid, 25% palmitic acid, and a meaningful amount of stearic acid within its intercellular lipid matrix, along with sapienic acid, wax esters, squalene, and cholesterol. The core insight the tallow proponents keep making — that beef tallow and human sebum share a majority-lipid composition — is factually correct. Palmitic acid and oleic acid dominate both. This is documented, not marketing.
The mechanism this supports is real: lipids that structurally resemble the skin’s own lipids incorporate more readily into the lamellar structures of the stratum corneum, the tightly stacked lipid layers that hold the skin barrier together. A 2010 study in the Journal of Lipid Research demonstrated exactly this — that topical lipids with fatty acid compositions similar to endogenous skin lipids were more effectively incorporated into stratum corneum lamellae than mismatched lipids. If your goal is occlusive, structural moisturization on a dry, damaged barrier, the case for a sebum-adjacent lipid is defensible on chemistry.
This is not the same as saying tallow is uniquely good. Shea butter, jojoba, squalane, and lanolin all argue similar cases and have significantly more clinical data behind them. But it is saying the case for tallow as a barrier-support moisturizer is not obviously wrong. It is the case for tallow as an acne, eczema, or psoriasis treatment that runs into the wall.
Why the acne claim is upside down
This is where the dermatologists are right and the ancestral wing has misread the biology.
The 2024 review in Journal of Dermatological Treatment on the role of sebum in acne pathophysiology is unambiguous: “almost all sebum lipids have comedogenic effects,” and specifically, “sebum monounsaturated fatty acids, squalene, and triglycerides have the highest comedogenicity potential.” Oleic acid — the single most abundant fatty acid in beef tallow, at roughly 47% of the profile — is a monounsaturated fatty acid. It is one of the compounds acne research specifically flags as follicular-blocking.
The evidence gets more specific. In acne-prone sebum, the linoleic acid content is measurably depleted, and the ratio of oleic to linoleic acid is elevated. This shift changes the physical structure of the barrier — oleic acid’s bent molecular geometry loosens the tightly packed ceramide-cholesterol-fatty-acid lipid layers, and increases permeability of the comedonal wall to inflammatory mediators. Topical application of oleic-acid-dominant oils to already oleic-heavy, linoleic-depleted skin makes the underlying ratio worse, not better. This is why olive oil, avocado oil, and other high-oleic oils have long been flagged as risky in acne-prone skin. Beef tallow, at 47% oleic acid, sits squarely in this class.
The Almatroud paper puts it delicately: “Given the lipid composition of tallow, its classification as ‘non-comedogenic’ on social media warrants further studies.” A more direct reading of the underlying literature: the widely repeated claim that tallow is non-comedogenic is a marketing artifact, not a finding. Nobody has done the human patch testing that would earn that label under any rigorous definition. It is being called non-comedogenic because nobody selling it has an incentive to test whether it is.
The eczema and psoriasis claims are in a similar position. In the 200-post sample, 25 posts claimed benefits for eczema and 12 for psoriasis. Zero randomized controlled trials support these applications. The mechanistic case for eczema is stronger than the acne case — occlusive lipids that support barrier repair can genuinely help atopic dermatitis — but that mechanism is not tallow-specific, it is class-general, and clinical trial data exists for petrolatum, ceramide-forward formulations, and colloidal oatmeal in ways it does not exist for tallow. Recommending tallow over an evidence-backed atopic dermatitis treatment is not obviously wrong. It is unsupported.
The skin type that actually benefits
The way to steelman the tallow argument is to name the person for whom it might genuinely work.
Chronically dry, non-acne-prone, non-fungal-acne-prone skin, on a patient who has had reactive responses to seed-oil-based moisturizers, synthetic occlusives, or fragrance-loaded creams. Someone with intact but persistently dehydrated skin, who is not seeing improvement from ceramide-forward drugstore formulations, and who does not have active eczema or rosacea flares. In that specific case, a well-rendered, unfragranced beef tallow product is defensible on lipid chemistry, generally well-tolerated, and offers occlusive moisture in a way petrolatum does with fewer aesthetic complaints. It is not magic. It is one option among many for a specific problem.
The tallow argument gets weaker as the skin gets oilier. On combination skin, the oleic acid load starts to become a real issue in the T-zone. On acne-prone skin, the mechanistic evidence is actively against it — you are adding to the exact lipid imbalance that drives comedogenesis. On fungal-acne-prone skin, oleic acid is one of the fatty acids Malassezia can metabolize, meaning tallow is a poor choice for a subset of consumers who are usually already struggling to find non-triggering products. In any of these cases, a high-linoleic oil like safflower, grapeseed, hemp seed, or rosehip is a better fatty-acid choice, and a properly formulated ceramide serum is a better barrier choice.
The moment tallow adds fragrance or essential oils — and many of the artisanal products do, either to mask the strong beef smell or to add a “natural” positioning — the risk profile expands to include contact dermatitis. Essential oils are among the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis in dermatology clinics. A fragranced tallow balm is not safer than a synthetic moisturizer with a well-formulated preservative system. Both may irritate the skin. One just gets to call itself natural.
What the trend is actually about
The most honest read of the beef tallow surge is that it is barely about tallow. The active ingredient in the trend is trust. A meaningful number of consumers have concluded that mainstream cosmetic formulation is not being straight with them — about ingredients, about sourcing, about safety data, about the influence of brand money on dermatologist recommendations — and are trying to find an ingredient category that predates the entire modern cosmetic industry as a way out of the trust problem.
That impulse is not stupid. This publication has covered, in detail, the FDA’s December 2025 PFAS report finding that the safety of 76% of the top cosmetic PFAS could not be determined for lack of data. It has covered the MoCRA compliance floor, at which roughly half of imported cosmetics fail. It has covered the legal meaninglessness of the term “clean.” If you are looking at the modern cosmetic aisle and concluding that a two-ingredient rendered animal fat is more transparent than what is on the shelf at Sephora, you are not being irrational. You are responding to a real information gap.
The problem is that the tallow ecosystem has replaced one opaque authority with another. The Almatroud data shows this plainly: an environment where 92% of the loudest voices have a financial stake in your purchase, and 0% disclose any risk. That is not more trustworthy than the cosmetic industry. It is the same information structure with different clothes.
The honest position — which is neither the dermatologist reflex nor the ancestral marketing pitch — is closer to this. Beef tallow is a lipid, not a miracle. Its fatty acid profile overlaps with human sebum in ways that plausibly support barrier repair on dry, non-acne skin. The claims for acne, eczema, and psoriasis are not supported by clinical data and are in tension with what we know about the biochemistry of those conditions. The information environment around the ingredient is unusually compromised, in ways that have now been quantified in the peer-reviewed literature. And the person who is going to benefit from tallow is not the person whose TikTok algorithm is telling them to buy it. It is the person who reads the ingredient list, understands the fatty acid ratios, matches those ratios against their own skin type, and treats the ingredient as one option in a category that includes several with better clinical evidence.

The peer-reviewed audit of tallow content is worth the read. So is the underlying sebum lipid literature. Neither one recommends the ingredient. Neither one condemns it. That is the correct posture for a lipid whose main problem, at the moment, is not the lipid.
